Southeast BIO (SEBIO) presents the annual BIO/Plan Competition. This year-long program has been designed to help foster the creation of new, venture-attractive life sciences and medical technology companies and development of exceptional corporate partnering opportunities here in the Southeast. Working closely with technology transfer offices and entrepreneurs throughout the region, the competition seeks out and pulls forward opportunities from our region’s research universities, research centers and existing entrepreneurs.

Past winners have received significant levels of interest from the business community following their selection. Other participants in the program report similar interest from the investment community and express confidence going forward as they now possess a fully-vetted, professionally-developed business strategy and accompanying written plan that will advance their technology to the next stage commercially. Future participants can expect even greater interest in their opportunity as the BIO/Plan Competition is now recognized as one of the premier business development programs in the Southeast.

Here’s how it works…

  1. The principal investigator/entrepreneur/technology transfer officer completes a short application outlining the concept and the associated opportunity in broad terms.
  2. A selection committee chooses 8 to 10 of the best ideas and pairs each with a team of seasoned professionals who will serve as mentors to the principals.  The group’s goal will be to further develop the concept and surround it with a first-class development plan.
  3. Following a period of 4 to 6 months of intimate engagement with the assigned mentoring team, a finished development plan will be submitted by the principals to a panel of experts, and a small group of BIO/Plan Finalists will be selected.  These Finalists will present their opportunity to the broader life science investment community at the annual SEBIO Investor Forum held each fall.
  4. The winner of the BIO/Plan Competition, who will be selected at the annual Investor Forum, and all Finalists will be awarded 2-3 face-to-face, private meetings with top investors in the region at which time they can more fully promote their opportunity and development plan.  These meetings will be scheduled during the months following the Investor Forum and include travel expenses.
