03-08-2006

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK -- TechJournal South, the business publication covering the Southeast's technology community, issued its Biotech 15 list in its March 2006 issue. Biotech 15 is comprised of some the most promising high growth biotech firms in the Southeast.

TechJournal South enlisted a number of biotech industry experts and biotech investors to help select the Biotech 15 list. Companies were selected based on a variety of criteria such as the uniqueness of the technology, management teams and the size of the market. The Biotech 15 list primarily focuses on earlier stage companies that have raised less $40 million in funding.

"The Southeast biotech community is thriving with numerous companies uniquely positioned with their technology," said Eric Gregg, Publisher of TechJournal South. "With the Biotech 15 list, we have simply tried to identify some of the future stars of Biotech out of the many to choose from in the region. We look forward to watching these companies and the Southeast's biotech community continue to thrive," said Gregg.

The 2006 Biotech 15 list includes:

*       Affinergy (Research Triangle Park, NC)
*       Applied Genetic Technologies (Alachua, Florida)
*       AxoGen (Gainesville, Florida)
*       DiaKine Therapeutics (Charlottesville, VA
*       Entegrian (Research Triangle Park, NC)
*       Gentris (Morrisville, NC)
*       InsectiGen (Athens, Georgia
*       Metabolon (Durham, NC)
*       NovaMin (Alachua, FL)

*       Qualyst (Chapel Hill, NC)
*       Regado Biosciences (Morrisville, NC)
*       Respirics (Raleigh, NC)
*       Syntherica (Durham, NC)

Nine of the fifteen companies chosen for the Biotech 15 List are former Southeastern BIO Investor Forum participants.

There are over 250 biotech firms in the Southeast, ranking the region third nationally behind only New England and California. The Southeast has more life sciences communities than any region, with biotech clusters growing from the region's strong research oriented universities.
