Athenix Raises $13 Million in Third Round of Venture Capital

Athenix, an RTP-based biotechnology company, has raised $13 million in its third round of venture capital, led by Finistere Partners. Athenix said that it plans to use the proceeds to continue moving products through field trials to registration. Its key products include major crops with enhanced traits such as tolerance to important herbicides and resistances to pests such as nematodes and insects. Three months ago, Athenix announced results from successful field trials of transgenic plants. Other investors in the new venture capital round include Intersouth Partners of Durham, North Carolina, Polaris Venture Partners, Boston Millennia Partners, Hunt Ventures and Eastman Ventures.
