About Alabama's Life Sciences Community

The state of Alabama has a dynamic biotechnology infrastructure, a business environment advantageous for life sciences and an exceptional quality of life.  Our diverse population, world-class academic institutions and natural resources make Alabama an attractive biotechnology hub in the United States.  With its industry-friendly tax structure, skilled labor force and geography central to the southeastern U.S. Alabama is a great place to do business.

Life Sciences in Alabama

Over 100 bioscience companies make their home in Alabama. The majority of these companies are conducting cutting edge research to find cures and develop treatments in areas including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hepatitis and osteoporosis.  Additionally, leading agricultural research is being conducted to improve crop yields and identify alternative sources of energy.

Most of the state's bioscience jobs are clustered along the metro corridor of Huntsville, Birmingham and Mobile. Easy access to research universities and a good supply of qualified employees make these cities a natural for partnerships between academia and private enterprise, which are critical for scientific research and technology transfer. The new Hudson-Alpha Institute in Huntsville, The Innovation Depot in Birmingham, Auburn Research Park in Auburn and The University of South Alabama's Biotechnical Research Unit in Mobile, bring together leading researchers and entrepreneurs from around the world in the development of cutting-edge science.
